Richard Bona & Mandekan Cubano

Bass guitar virtuoso Richard Bona is widely regarded as has one of the best bass players around and has been dubbed the African Jaco Pastorius. The master bass player is a welcome guest at the North Sea Jazz Festival where he shared the stage with blind guitar player Raul Midón in 2011, followed by a phenomenal show in 2012 alongside jazz guitarist Mike Stern.
Richard Bona was born in 1967 in a small village in Cameroon. As a child he played on home-made instruments as well as the balafon, a kind of wooden xylophone. After hearing bass legend Jaco Pastorius play he devoted his attention fully to the bass guitar. Having completed several musical studies in Germany and France he was presented with the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of Manu Dibango, Salif Keita, Jacques Higelin, and Didier Lockwood. But his big breakthrough came as the bass guitarist for Joe Zawinul's Zawinul Syndicate project. Richard's virtuoso and melodious bass guitar playing as well as his soulful voice and pleasant personality are guaranteed to get to you and make you imagine yourself to be in Africa. We can recommend this concert to all who like fusion jazz and world music!
