American jazz fusion band Spyro Gyra boasts a career that spans more than 40 years, which easily makes them one of the most successful jazz fusion bands of all time. Their music, often featured on smooth jazz radio stations, combines jazz with elements of R&B, funk and pop music.
Spyro Gyra was formed in the mid seventies by alto saxophonist Jay Beckenstein. The band have played over 5000 shows, released over 30 studio albums and sold more than 10 million of them word-wide. 2014 marks the 35th anniversary of Morning Dance, their second album, which brought them their international breakthrough. In spite of their long career they still average about 100 live performances per year and their music has lost none of it’s lustre, as evidenced by the fact that their four latest releases all received a Grammy nomination. Spiro’s music is anything but dated – their songs are still being played on the radio every day, and not just by the jazz and easy listening stations. Line up: Jay Beckenstein (sax), Julio Fernandez (guitar), Lionel Cordew (drums), Scott Ambush (bass) and Tom Schuman (keys).
